Weathered Wood

There is something about the textures of weathered wood that appeals to me, which I suspect links back to growing up on a farm in Canada, playing in our barn made of weathered cedar. I love how it has deep grooves but it is still strong. Using a piece of weathered wood as a substrate for art sends a completely different message than using a new canvas or fresh, white piece of paper, because it has history.

‘A Home for Pollinators’

This little weathered block was a perfect fit for this FarmArt piece about pollinators. The shape reminded me of an insect hotel, so I drilled holes in the side and attached insects found on my windowsill with encaustic wax, the rusty nails represent the farm and it’s history, the tiny painted landscape and a pressed flower, also encased in encaustic wax, illustrate the perfect environment at FarmEd which allows pollinators to thrive.

“Weathered’

Sometimes we complain about stormy weather and cloudy skies because it is inconvenient but the elements are essential to sustain life. As I get older and begin to be weathered by time and experience, I have begun to appreciate, and even embrace, the elements more and more. In this piece, the stormy sky was created with natural woad and sage watercolour paints on weathered wood, float framed on lime-washed ash.
