Collagraphs

The collagraph technique has always been my favourite type of printmaking. The embossed shape imprinted into the paper never fails to excite me. Recently, I discovered that I could use my natural watercolours to paint directly on leaves, flowers, feathers, etc, allow them to dry and press them into damp cartridge paper with my printing press. This technique has me completely hooked and I have used it in my artists’ books, which work so beautifully with both sides of the pages exposed; the embossing on one side of the paper, coloured version on the other, making the viewer curious to keep turning the page.

Carol Harvey Sainfoin

Sainfoin

Sainfoin is a legume plant that has been promoted by FarmEd for its environmental benefits. Some of the key benefits of sainfoin include:
1. Soil health: Sainfoin has a deep root system that helps improve soil health by increasing soil organic matter, reducing soil erosion, and improving soil structure.
2. Biodiversity: Sainfoin is known to support a range of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. By planting sainfoin, farmers can help increase the biodiversity of their farms.
3. Reduced fertilizer use: Sainfoin is a nitrogen-fixing plant, which means it has the ability to capture nitrogen from the air and convert it into a form that plants can use. This reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, which can have negative environmental impacts.
4. Reduced pesticide use: Sainfoin contains condensed tannins, which can help protect it from pests and diseases. This means that farmers who plant sainfoin may be able to reduce their use of pesticides.
5. Livestock health: Sainfoin is also known to have nutritional benefits for livestock. It contains high levels of protein and is rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium. This can help improve the health and productivity of livestock, which in turn can benefit farmers.
