It's all coming together - getting signage ready, oaty date squares baked, fundraising pack arrived this morning, all in preparation for opening day of OXFORDSHIRE ARTWEEKS this SATURDAY the 17th at 11am - 6pm daily until Monday the 26th May.

Huummm...interesting 🤔 Had a little go at this and it was addictive & fun!!

I have had this idea in my head for a while... to use this reclaimed chicken wire from an old forest fence and sculpt it to represent the forest canopy, wrapping the wires with various wool, raffia and other natural fibres (nettle twine) in greens and yellows so the light shines through the gaps, as it does when you look up through the branches on a sunny day ☀️🌳🎨

It will be a challenge to work out what sections to cut out and what to leave in. Love a challenge.

Hooray! My hedgerow-inspired weave is finished and installed in the ceiling of my studio ready for this Saturday when Artweeks begins in my area! 🎨

Happy and relieved to have this in and sorted....it represents a lot of sleepless nights since it is the first big weave installation I have ever done.

Particularly proud to have finished it and installed it myself with a sore back and shoulder...#womanpower!

Managed to embed my handmade bird's nest into my 2.5 metre long hedgerow-inspired weave. Phew!

It was tricky and hard on my shoulder (I have had to take a break from weaving this piece to heal a bit), so very happy it is in and I am nearly ready to install the weave into my studio ceiling for Oxfordshire Artweeks which opens May 17th in my area, site 473 Chipping Norton 🎨

My Oxfordshire Artweeks video for 2025 🎨

These are inspired by ancestral 'journey sticks '

These are inspired by ancestral 'journey sticks ' - a tradition practised by many ancient tribes to tell the story of a journey by collecting and wrapping natural materials along the way. Embellishing the wood was a way of showing respect and gratitude for nature's abundance.

In this case I have used various twigs from our local forest and hedgerows wrapped with naturally-dyed local wools, papers and muslin painted with my natural inks and paints, birch bark and bark cloth.

These are very calming and satisfying to make, like little fibre art sketches, each with their own composition and character.

Wrapping feels like an act of preservation or healing.

I will seal the ends with local beeswax before float mounting them in box frames for @oxfordshireartweeks 🎨

A little weaving sampler using plants and fibres from hedgerows (branches), fields (dandelions) and garden (orchid leaves) with flax thread and local sheep/alpaca wool dyed with weld, a traditional dye plant.

A great way to celebrate Earth Day - she offers so much.

This and similar, larger weaves and other art work will be exhibited in my studio for Oxfordshire Artweeks Open Studios 17th - 26th May 11am - 6pm daily.

Happy Earth Day 2025 🌍

There are so many ways to honour the earth - by going for a nature walk, gardening, foraging, feeding birds, making bee/insect hotels, leaving a wild patch at the edge of your garden, planting wildflowers or any plants, building a garden pond, putting out bird baths, resisting mowing your lawn until late spring, going for a picnic in nature, creating art from natural materials, picking up litter, composting, listening to a river, the wind or bird song, planting trees.

How do you honour this beautiful world we live in?

Spent a wonderful day with this talented and welcoming group of Oxford Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, as a guest.

Tried my hand at an Ashford rigid heddle loom weaving a pattern, took pictures of favourites done by others. And watched the Nettle Dress which was inspiring, emotional and poetic.

I do believe I will be back - weaving, wool, natural dyes and pigments, talented, friendly people, cake and coffee, what's not to like!?!🧵🎨☕

Next in my series 'Weave Like A Bird' - inspired

Next in my series 'Weave Like A Bird' - inspired by an article I read about how naturalists use birds' nests as indicators for the state of natural habitats, since birds are very resourceful and use the materials from the immediate area.

So, this one was woven with both manmade and natural materials, too many to list!

This one is woven onto reclaimed chicken wire. It took a long time to build up layers. See progress pictures.

This and many other nature-inspired pieces will be on display in my studio during Oxfordshire Artweeks, which begins in North & West Oxfordshire 17th May 2025.
