Since I have just started this collage journal (using one of the handmade sketchbooks I made earlier in the week) I thought I would share it's development with you 🎨

If I am to make this part of my daily practice, I know enough about myself and the way I work that I must limit materials, size and time to prevent fiddling. Like many artists I tend to go in deep, lose track of time and work a piece too much, sometimes crushing the initial energy in the process.

So, I am allowing 20 minutes of my daily practise for a page, limiting myself to 3-5 collage pieces in a space 14cm squared. This also eliminates too many choices which all take up more time.

Sometimes I will just post the finished page, other times I will film myself making the collage so you can see my process, which I hope will inspire you to do some along with me.

Collage is a brilliant, expressive way to explore mark making techniques, which I will demonstrate along the way, and practise composition because you can place the pieces before glueing them to see if they work 🎨

This vessel, called 'In Harmony with Nature', is made of plaster, representing human development, embedded with nature finds, presenting a push and pull between the two.

The small woven element provides a solution or a compromise - a beautiful fragment created from natural flax wool using human hands. An example of humans working with nature, not against it.

The outer vessel is painted with my homemade oak gall ink.

The most challenging part of Artweeks preparation is not making the art, cleaning my studio or tidying the studio garden, it is getting a decent picture of myself. Ugh. 🙄

Really enjoyed making these. Each one is unique.

These will be included in my Oxfordshire Artweeks Open Studio as 'Books to Buy' on my online portfolio.

Preparations for Oxfordshire Artweeks are happening in several ways - last week it was uploading some images onto my gallery on the website which included this one, 'Books to Browse', my 5 favourite artists books on various nature themes (meadows x 2, seaside, forest floor and leaf collagraphs) which are not for sale, because they are near and dear to me, but will be available for browsing 🎨

Such a fun collage making day with my Saturday Cre

Such a fun collage making day with my Saturday Creative Club students which we named crumple and roll - CRUMPLE the paper and create textures with graphite overtop and ROLL strips of paper and dip them in avocado, coffee, elderberry inks and natural watercolour paints to create unique shapes and patterns 🎨

Next workshop they will be used to embellish their artist's books.

Too much creative fun! The best parts are the discoveries from being curious and brave 🎨

My teaching days are Fridays and Saturdays - three time slots 10-12, 2-4 and 7-9. Mixed media techniques and self expression for ages ages 5 - 15. Each workshop £30.

Sorting through art in my studio led to this - using experimental ink and natural paint doodles, expressive mark making, on good quality, gessoed watercolour paper to make sketchbook/journal covers with pastel papers, (which I no longer use), for the pages.

Makes a sturdy structure with original art covers. May make more of these and offer them for purchase during Oxfordshire Artweeks in May 🎨

Nothing goes to waste on my watch.

Experimenting with transparency in these paper 'sandwiches'- collage pieces, nature finds and natural inks and watercolours sandwiched between tea bag paper and hung in the light to reveal the textures and behind.

The title of these pages, destined to be woven together into a book, is 'Delicate Decay', shining some light on the age old process of decay, which keeps the world going around on so many levels. And in this process some beautiful delicate leaves are skeletonized creating a natural lace.

Where would we be without regeneration and decomposition on repeat?

My favourite scroll so far - 'In Dialogue with Nature'.

Much of my work consists of a continual dialogue between nature - her colours, textures and shapes - and what materials I use to describe them.

Most of the materials I choose are local and natural; fibres, papers, nature finds and collagraphs, prints or rubbings of them, and of course my natural inks, crayons, watercolour and gouache paints made from plants and soil.

This piece also includes two woven segments using flax and nettle thread/wool, which are absolutely beautiful to work with.

And this scroll is topped and tailed by two antique spools from a retired woollen mill to represent the wool industry in our area of UK, Oxfordshire, since this scroll is about local, natural materials.
