A little weaving sampler using plants and fibres from hedgerows (branches), fields (dandelions) and garden (orchid leaves) with flax thread and local sheep/alpaca wool dyed with weld, a traditional dye plant.

A great way to celebrate Earth Day - she offers so much.

This and similar, larger weaves and other art work will be exhibited in my studio for Oxfordshire Artweeks Open Studios 17th - 26th May 11am - 6pm daily.

Happy Earth Day 2025 🌍

There are so many ways to honour the earth - by going for a nature walk, gardening, foraging, feeding birds, making bee/insect hotels, leaving a wild patch at the edge of your garden, planting wildflowers or any plants, building a garden pond, putting out bird baths, resisting mowing your lawn until late spring, going for a picnic in nature, creating art from natural materials, picking up litter, composting, listening to a river, the wind or bird song, planting trees.

How do you honour this beautiful world we live in?

Spent a wonderful day with this talented and welcoming group of Oxford Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, as a guest.

Tried my hand at an Ashford rigid heddle loom weaving a pattern, took pictures of favourites done by others. And watched the Nettle Dress which was inspiring, emotional and poetic.

I do believe I will be back - weaving, wool, natural dyes and pigments, talented, friendly people, cake and coffee, what's not to like!?!🧵🎨☕

Next in my series 'Weave Like A Bird' - inspired

Next in my series 'Weave Like A Bird' - inspired by an article I read about how naturalists use birds' nests as indicators for the state of natural habitats, since birds are very resourceful and use the materials from the immediate area.

So, this one was woven with both manmade and natural materials, too many to list!

This one is woven onto reclaimed chicken wire. It took a long time to build up layers. See progress pictures.

This and many other nature-inspired pieces will be on display in my studio during Oxfordshire Artweeks, which begins in North & West Oxfordshire 17th May 2025.

I love that the colour for the doors and windows I chose is called Constable Clouds, a pale, soft warm grey with a tiny hint of mauve.

'Weave Like a Bird' - paper mache and weaving on a

'Weave Like a Bird' - paper mache and weaving on a branch using nature finds and naturally dyed wool 🎨

This was a lot of fun, also a lot of quite delicate work - new respect for birds!

After reading that birds often make two nests, an inner one of fine materials and a more rustic outer nest, I started by making a cup from paper mache and glued on some shreds of bark cloth and fine twigs and fibres. I studied how they attach their nests to twigs, then did my best with that. Then I wove around horizontally, then vertically, and finally weaving in some moss, roots and leaves.

This is part of my Nature in 'New Dimensions' exhibition in May for Oxfordshire Artweeks Open Studios.

Changing it up, back working into my collage journal to give my shoulders a rest from weaving. Love practising compositions by fusing old and new art to create something new new! 🎨

The rules are that I create the collages in a limited time, 20mins each, using 4-6 collage pieces on a square piece of paper 14cm square.

Some details of my 2.5 metre hedgerow-inspired weave. On the home stretch, about half a metre to go. Enjoying every row 🎨

I am following the Saori weaving ethos where you roll up the weave as you go and but do not unravel it to see what you have already done, making the reveal more exciting and also making it a very mindful process - focusing on the present, not looking into the past of what you have done or to the future to make it match up.
