A wonderful, colourful day of fabric dyeing to wrap up my Summer Art Program for 2025!

Beautiful pieces using Logwood, Weld, Sappanwood, Indigo, Madder Root and Dock Leaf using several different dyeing methods to achieve patterns - Shibori, tie dye and Indian block printing shown here, also dip dyeing and petal pounding.

The students have learned a lot of techniques this summer, but no one more than me!

Natural fabric dyeing is definitely here to stay as part of my art practise.

What a fantastic start to my Summer Art Program! So proud of these students who have been coming to my art workshops since they were 5!

So many skills learned today - collage work on the inner frame, geli prints on the outer frame, hammering nails to make the loom, then weaving.

We have decided to call these Venetian Weaves. I think they deserve the fancy title!

I love that they are similar in format but so different in colour and atmosphere - the essence of art, expressions of the artist who created them 🎨

Enjoying working on this little piece, 'Familiar Roots', using my natural cordage and the twining method to connect it together.

Love the colours in the cordage and the roots against the lime green and sunny flowers.

Not sure if it is finished, may add another double row of cordage.

Love these mini daisies (Mayweed) that remind me of walks through the fields in Ontario as a child.

So much fun experimenting with another batch of fabric dyeing. This book is a visual Exel spreadsheet of my dyeing records 🎨

Some firm new favourites - logwood, which is a stunningly beautiful crimson red that turns purple when dry, (honestly, where has logwood been all my life?!) and safflower, virtually liquid sunshine with vibrant orange and yellow tones.

Other ones I tried and like are oak galls, (earthy blacks and greys), madder root with an iron mordant (deep burnt orange), dyer's coreopsis (amber yellow), black beans (pale pink), beech nuts (lovely purple/grey), dock leaves (light chestnut brown).

There are always the ones that are less successful - nettles (pale green/grey), mehonia berries (a muddy, indescribable colour), hawthorn (pale tan), willow (pale peach) none of which I will probably bother with again.

Learning by doing is so satisfying, and there will always be the ones that don't turn out, but you never know until you try. Out of 12 trials, to find 8 successes is good going. It doesn't always work out that way.

I have experimented with new colours for my own pleasure, saved 5 items of my clothing from going to the charity shops, and mostly, to teach my Summer Art Program students which begins on the 21st of July - message me for details 🎨

Enjoying experimenting with natural cordage using different plants to see the characteristics of each - colour, smoothness/texture, thickness, strength, sheen, flexibility, how it dries and availability - to see which one will suit the meadow weave project I need it for 🎨
